Treat Your Deck Like Another Room

Do you try to hide your deck so no one can see it? Is it dreary and colorless? Would you use it if it had a bit of color? There are many ways you can update your deck and make it an extension of your home. Just like an extra room and who can’t use extra space?

So after you’ve decided to improve your deck, it first needs a good cleaning. Sweep off the dirt and grime of the winter months, and be sure to pick out the leaves and stuff that’s stuck between the boards. Summer’s coming so get ready now by washing it off. If that doesn’t provide the results you want try power washing.

Now after it’s clean, carefully check the entire deck and replace any loose nails, and repair or replace damaged boards. Some portions may need sanding and smoothed out before going on to the next step.

Does it need to be stained? If you choose to stain the wood, there are a variety of colors so you can match or contrast the exterior and/or interior of your home. Once the stain dries you’ll have to decide how you are going to use the deck. Will you prepare food and eat on the deck? You’ll need a table, and stools or benches could replace cumbersome chairs.

The size of your deck will influence what you place on it. Will you have room for a glider like swing or possibly a chaise lounge or two? A movable umbrella would be a good idea to shade a particular area especially if there is no awning.

Regardless of the size, the choices are yours to make of course and if you take the time to arrange it, in an attractive way, you’ll be happier with the end results. Try to keep the deck free of clutter, and put every inch to good use. For instance, you could have planters around the edge or even a picket fence to boarder the decking. A screened deck could be another choice especially in the evening when lighting would be necessary.

Whatever you decide the choices are yours to make and you’ll want the new deck to fit your way of life. Even if you have the furniture, you can brighten up the area with new pillows and throws. If you plan to entertain guests or use it strictly for family your new deck will be a welcome addition to your home.

Orange County Vinyl Fence: Vinyl Decking

Vinyl Decking? Yes, we said vinyl decking. Believe it or not, it’s available and is as durable as vinyl fencing. Like vinyl fences, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the main ingredient. Although they add a bit of titanium dioxide to the mix so the vinyl will not yellow and it also has UV protection. They add a few other components and the vinyl will withstand harsh weather and will not crack under normal heavy loads, but may when put under a tremendous amount of pressure.

Vinyl decking also comes in assorted colors with the color added right into the vinyl. Some even have the natural look of wood. The vinyl decking should last for the life of your home. The vinyl adapts to the weather and expands and contracts. Some have noticed a slight fading in the first three months after installation, and this is natural for the product as it adjusts to the changing temperatures and the environment.

You can paint the vinyl, but that would defeat the purpose of the easy to care original product. The homeowner will have to repaint it regularly. If you paint the product, the manufacturer will not stand behind it.

To clean the vinyl decking, water under hose pressure will easily wash the dirt and grime off. It may be necessary to add a mild detergent if you allow the dirt to remain for a period of time.
Another interesting fact about vinyl decking material is that it will not ignite unless fire is held directly onto the material. As soon as you remove the fire, the vinyl extinguishes itself.

When you investigate the product, you will find that vinyl decking is the best and most efficient product on the market today. You will have pride in your home because vinyl decking has been proven to be the very best in the industry. Even though it is relatively new, the industry has used PVC for many years and the results have been very favorable.

Check out the contractors that deal in vinyl decking. Ask for references, and ask about the procedures they use to get the job done. See if they have samples in their showrooms. Compare companies and prices, and don’t compare prices against quality. Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has any bad references. If they do, did the company stand behind their product?

Do your homework and you won’t be sorry, and you sure won’t be sorry you chose vinyl decking.
